What a difference twenty four hours makes.
As of last night, the Eizengas were playing exclusively on the JV team and only seven were going to be on the varsity team. But the injury bug was caught by Amy, as she sprained her ankle at practice. So now the Eizenga girls are going to play varsity at the Grace quad tomorrow just so Calumet/Calvary can have a full team.
So tonight was the REAL opening of the season for the junior high and the JV teams, but not for the varsity. THEY got to play yet another exhibition, this time against some young men and alumni players.
I was not able to attend the junior high games but I got a report from Coach Boss. They played very well against Portage's JV team and won 25-14, 25-14. Coach Boss reports that she was able to substitute liberally with B team members and they played very well.
After that, the JV "b" team played Portage Christian's varsity team. Calumet/Calvary won this one easily as well, 25-4, 25-11.
The next game involved the JV "a" team playing Duneland Lutheran's varsity team. These games were very well played by both sides, but Calumet/Calvary won in three straight, 26-24, 25-17, 25-16.
The last game of the evening was the varsity team less Amy, Taylor and Tina, plus Rachel and Emily against Kelsey Boss, Stephanie Carlson, and various and sundry young men. They presented a good challenge for the girls. The play was spirited and competitive as well as a little ragged. The girls hustled and their serving was very good. Their hitting was good, while defense, coverage and service reception were OK. The girls won 25-17, 18-25 and 25-22.
Tomorrow the varsity finally gets to play actual games, as the team takes on Trinity, Grace and Covenant in a quad meet at Grace tomorrow, beginning at 9:00 AM. The girls are all over at our house tonight. Coach Carr is here as well to make sure the girls actually get some sleep tonight. The Eizengas will join us tomorrow morning for the trek down to Kankakee. The info for the roster additions are:
Rachel Eizenga, #11, So, 5'8", S/MH
Emily Eizenga, #?, So, 5'8", S
See you tomorrow.
