Latest goings-on

Hello boys and girls:

We are about to embark on the 2009 Calvary (no more Calumet, I've officially given up calling the team Calumet, only because I'm lazy and don't want to type any more than I have to) girls' volleyball season. So, of course that means it's time for a rant.

Guess who the rant is about? Very good, boys and girls. You are correct. It is ICSTS. But the different thing this time is....I will actually praise them as well. Just a little.

The main topic today is the rankings. The preseason rankings were done several weeks ago, and it appeared from the way the brackets were laid out that Calvary was ranked third. This was a topic of an earlier post; I thought we should have been second. Whatever. Now the ICSTS is going to do a top-five based on a poll of the coaches, and has already come out with the first one. Well, Coach Carr didn't find out about this until after the deadline for submissions, so we had no input for this one. I'm not sure how much difference this would have made, but probably it would have made some. Again, whatever.

The point here is the perception of the other teams in the state on Calvary's ability. Let's just say it's not very high. In fact, it's pretty bad. Calvary finished out of the top five; they were listed in the "other teams receiving votes", and if we are ranked in the order that they listed those teams, we're picked seventh. Yes, seventh. Which is bad enough, but what's worse is what teams are ahead of us. Yes, Clinton is ahead. We don't why this is; I have addressed why we should be above them earlier. But the real insult is that Granger is ahead of us. You know, the Granger that OUR JV TEAM PLAYS AND OFTEN BEATS!!! Yikes and a half. No, double yikes.

I really would like to talk to these coaches. Either they don't like us... I was going list the possibilities of what their thinking was, but truly, I have no idea.

Oh yeah, the praise. The ICSTS will be reseeding for the state tournament on September 25. It's a little early, but at least about a third of the season will be played by then (a third of our season anyway; we have our two tournaments after this date). We will have played Faith and Clinton by then, so the pecking order should be much clearer by then. I think it's quite likely, assuming that we're better than the new public schools on the schedule, that we may be 14-0 or 13-1. So we should be ranked one or two, but again, logic has little to do with this, it seems.

So girls, remember when you play Clinton that they are ranked five slots above you. You might want to send a message to the voters here.
